Permission Slip Required for Kids to Recite Pledge of Allegiance

The principal of a public school in Rep. Barney Frank’s (D-Mass.) ultra-liberal district is “bringing back the Pledge of Allegiance” next month, but only those students whose parents sign their permission slips are allowed to honor America.

On Monday, Devotion Principal Gerardo J. Martinez sent a letter to parents telling them that the school in Brookline he would begin leading weekly recitations next month of the ‘controversial’ Pledge of Allegiance, reports

“I urge you to have a conversation as a family to help your children understand why I will be reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and to support them in feeling comfortable and confident in the decision on whether or not to participate,” Martinez said in the letter.

Parent Judi Puritz Cook said pledging allegiance to America and its flag is “uncomfortable” for herself and her two sons who have been taught to “think very carefully before making any promise.”

When Martinez begins to recite the Pledge of Allegiance next month, Cook said the school will no longer be “inclusive of everyone.”

“We’re celebrating diversity and including people… and then to be the one sitting there, waiting for the pledge to finish, [that] doesn’t feel inclusive,” she said. “Yeah, it’s weird. That’s the right word for it.”

Agree or disagree with providing children with the option of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in the classroom? Sound-off below.

  1. I can understand why this school would do this. There are people because of religious beliefs who do not believe in pledging to anything other than their God such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses and other religious groups.

    • Pledging Allegiance to your country hasn’t the first thing to do with Pledging yourself to another god. So people need to get over themselves and stop the damn whining.

  2. When I was a kid, we said the pledge every day, just like my kid does now, if a child’s parents for whatever reason didn’t want them to do it, it wasn’t made into a big deal – they just didn’t do it. In Jr. High & High school in my town, the kids themselves could choose to opt out, but most did not. There was no ‘controversy’.
What the hell is so ‘controversial’ about promising to be loyal to your own country anyway? Why was the Pledge ever removed from the school in the first place?

  3. This issue is a classic example of why our country cannot prosper anymore. When women make decisions, they are usually wrong, because they think “feel good” and emotional. Obviously she guides the child, likely because the father isn’t around, or she has broken him down to a wimp. Her limp wristed approach will probably cause her son to be gay, on medication, and just another confused liberal. I hate to shock her, but it is the man’s responsibility to teach a son about life, God, and values. Isn’t it obvious that a child doesn’t have the intellect, the experience, or the knowledge to make quality decisions? Lay the foundation, then teach the kid to think for himself. This will eliminate the insane variables. These issues insure that a society perpetuates, and does not decay. Loose this understanding and you end up where we are now.

  5. In my opinion all schools should recite the pledge. If you can’t pledge your allegiance to the country in which you live then get the F**K out…

    • KW – right on, you are. Judi Puritz Cook is a classic example of what is wrong with our country today and why it will eventually fail if this situation isn’t corrected. Anyone who doesn’t want to pledge allegiance to our flag and our country deserves neither. They can take up citizenship of some other country and move there. A country doesn’t have to be considerate of anyone who would just as soon flush it down the toilet rather than pledge their lives to save and protect, if necessary, the very entity that sustains them. There’s something bizarre about the feeling of entitlement someone like Puritz Cruz obviously has, where they can even rationalize that their position makes any kind of sense from a point of intelligence, logic, justice and social and national cohesion. Completely focused on “me”, it seems.

  6. I’m with KW for the most part. A foreign student would never be pressured into saying the pledge and the other kids would know why. Duh. Any other citizen should say the pledge and should be mocked if they don’t.

All this “inclusive” BS does not apply to Americans doing something American in an American school. What part of that does this airhead not understand…??!!?? Perhaps she thinks the school’s at Turtle Bay? (the UN for those from Rio Linda)

  7. WHAT!? Are they serious or is this some kind of joke?

They shouldn’t need PERMISSION SLIPS to recite the pledge. It should be a REQUIRED daily activity. When I went to school those who had religious views against it, mostly the Jehovah’s Witness, they were still made to rise and be silent, but they did not have to participate, but they still had to stand and keep their mouth shut while the rest of us did.

We were taught it was the American thing to do. All Americans stood and proudly crossed their hand over their heart and made a PATRIOTIC PLEDGE to our Nation’s Symbol. Maybe they need to teach the Administrators and Teachers and Politicians while we are at, exactly what the Flag means and what it represents. I was taught in the 1 – 3rd grades all about that. I’ve never forgotten. I am PROUD TO RECITE THE PLEDGE, because I am a PROUD AMERICAN!

Permission slips to recite the pledge … BAH!!!
